Women face any number of causes of sexual dysfunction. Two of the main culprits are the natural effects of aging and the changes—physically and emotionally—brought about by pregnancy and vaginal childbirth.
- Hormonal changes: When a woman’s estrogen levels diminish, that changes the body’s function and structure. It can decrease blood flow to the pelvis, cause skin to be thinner, lower libido (and lubrication), and sap the energy for desire, thereby changing how we respond to stimulation.
- Menopause: causes decreased libido, decreased lubrication, and more.
- Medical issues: The effects of diseases or conditions—and/or the medicines we take to treat them—can greatly alter our sexual function.
- Emotional issues: Depression (especially postpartum depression) is devastating for intimacy. Other psychological and social issues also contribute to dysfunction, including anxiety, stress, and low self-esteem.
