It regulates weight gain and loss and determines how much energy is available for the brain and other organs. The body produces 2 thyroid hormones:

• T3: Your organs utilize triiodothyronine, the active thyroid hormone, to stimulate the metabolic process. It enters the mitochondria of the cell to trigger energy production—providing the energy required to carry out essential life functions.
• T4: Your body primarily produces thyroxine. This inactive hormone circulates the body until your organs need energy; then they convert from T4 into T3.

For women, the thyroid gland regulates the menstrual cycle, impacts fertility, and strengthens hair, skin, and nails. In men, low thyroid function lowers testosterone levels, which impacts lean muscle mass and cholesterol.

• Unexplained weight gain
